  • Student poses with donations of soup cans

    A Souper Bowl to Remember

The New England Patriots pulled off a come from behind win during Super Bowl LI, but the story was a little different for the Brookside Place "Souper Bowl." Students were asked to bring in cans of soup and vote for their preferred team by placing their cans in the cooresponding team box.  In that contest, the Atlanta Falcons were the decisive winners with 235 cans. The Patriots garnered 111 votes. All cans were donated to Cranford Family Care, making the Cranford community winners too. This annual service project was coordinated by the Brookside Place School Student Council.

    Pop Quiz!

Q: What are some qualities of living things?

A: They have a life cycle. They grow and, eventually, they die.

    Q: Is a pumpkin a fruit or a vegatable?

A: It is a fruit because it is a plant that flowers and has seeds.

These were some of the concepts BPS Kindergarten students discussed on a walking tour of nearby Dreyer's Farm.  The exploration of the concept of living verse non-living things is part of the state-wide science curriculum for kindergarten.  Students in the morning and afternoon sessions enjoyed the seasonal field trip to the last working farm in Union County, NJ and learned these foundational concepts through first-hand experiences.  It was a fun day of learning!

  • Four students in orange

Brookside Place School glowed orange on Unity Day in support of students who have faced bullying. Students and staff wore orange clothing to show they support a school environment that is based on kindness, respect and inclusion.  "Orange provides a powerful, visually compelling expression of solidarity," explains Paula Goldberg on the National Bullying Prevention Center web site. "When hundreds of individuals in a school or organization wear orange, the vibrant statement becomes a conversation starter, sending a unified message to kids to know they are not alone." Unity Day is the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month.
